- Hemorrhoids are swollen veins around the rectum - common both before and after birth
- Constipation is the main driver, and it gets worse right after birth
- After birth, the body redirects fluid toward milk production instead of supporting normal bowel function
- Swelling in the legs and feet is common in the final stretch - not usually a sign of a problem on its own
Two unglamorous, related topics that don't get talked about enough. This one is mostly what I learned rather than a war story - and I'm writing it down because nobody warned me about the "why" behind either.
Hemorrhoids
Hemorrhoids are swollen veins that can be felt or seen around the rectum. Pregnancy makes them more likely, largely because of constipation - and they're even more common right after birth, for a specific reason I found genuinely surprising: the body prioritizes routing fluid toward milk production, which leaves less supporting normal bowel function and makes constipation worse at exactly the time your body is also recovering.
The care that's generally suggested: staying ahead of constipation with fluids and fibre, not straining, and warm sitz baths for comfort. Ask your provider before using any topical treatment, especially in the days right after birth.
Swelling
Swelling in the legs, ankles, and feet is common in the final stretch of pregnancy as fluid retention increases. Elevating your feet when you can, staying hydrated, and moving regularly all help with the everyday version of it. Sudden or severe swelling - especially with headache or vision changes - is the kind worth calling your provider about the same day, rather than waiting it out.
